Indigenous accountability: How can all research be more accountable to First Nations people? | Arts, Design and Architecture – UNSW Sydney

On 8 December 2020, members of the research team (BJ Newton, Megan Blaxland and Jen Skattebol) gave a presentation as part of the Social Policy Research Centre seminar series. The research team shared the recent changes to the code of conduct within the Australian Association for Research in Education (AARE) and an update to submission process for future conferences and events held by AARE, which requires all presenter to ‘give an account of who they are and how they work with Indigenous peoples and matters’. We discussed this in relation to our Engaging Families in Early Education project and invited Professor Gawaian Bodkin-Andrews to discuss the developments at AARE so we could transfer learning from this research association to other contexts.

On 9 February 2021, Megan Blaxland gave a presentation as part of the Social Policy Research Centre seminar series. Megan is one of the chief investigators on our project. She presented the findings from a separate but relevant project Equitable Access to High Quality Early Childhood Education funded by the Gonski Institute for Education, UNSW Sydney.

In seeking to determine why families might not engage in early education and care (ECEC), rather than labelling these families ‘hard to reach’ the research team inverted this concept and examined what might make services ‘hard to use’.

On 27 November 2022, Marianne Fenech was interviewed by Chris Hall, an Early Education Consultant, as part of NSW Family Day Care Association’s PD in Your Pocket Series. Marianne is one of the chief investigators on our project. She spoke about findings from an earlier ARC Linkage project What’s best for my child: Parents perspectives of childcare quality and early learning as contributors to childcare choice as well as well as early findings from our project.
